What Triggers the Check Engine Light?

3. Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter reduces harmful exhaust emissions. When it fails, you'll usually notice reduced performance, a rotten egg smell, and an exhaust-system fault. Ontario ended emissions testing for passenger vehicles in 2019, so this does not affect registration renewal. Heavy diesel commercial vehicles remain subject to applicable testing. This is one of the more expensive repairs — catching it early matters.

4. Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor

The MAF sensor measures how much air enters the engine so the computer can calculate the correct fuel amount. A dirty or failing MAF sensor causes rough idling, poor acceleration, and increased fuel consumption.

5. Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils

Worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil will cause engine misfires, which the OBD-II system detects immediately. You may feel a rough idle or hesitation under acceleration. Ignore it long enough and you risk catalytic converter damage.

Solid vs. Flashing — What's the Difference?

A solid check engine light means there's a stored fault that needs attention, but the vehicle is generally safe to drive in the short term. A flashing or blinking check engine light is different — it indicates an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over safely and do not continue driving.
